A brief introduction

Ruth S. Mar is a native of Seattle, WA, which is evidenced in her coffee snobbishness. She used to walk unsheltered in rain like the average Seattleite; but after being caught in a couple of shoe-drenching rainstorms in Toronto (her second home), she has decided umbrellas are a worthy invention.

Ruth has four younger brothers who are all taller than she is.

Ruth is a musician by day and a web designing nerd between practice sessions.

Why rushyama.com?

I have a site for professional music purposes (see sidebar), but had been wanting a more personal web presence where I could compile resources, thoughts, ideas, and so on — an extended blog of sorts. I hear they’re all the rage. My previous attempts at blogging using services like Blogger and Xanga (yes, had one of those way back when) were never successful. This was partly…ok, mostly…due to lack of commitment. But I also disliked the lack of control over my blog design. Putting together rushyama.com was/is my attempt to brush up my web design skills and motivate me to start blogging again.

To answer the real question…

Everyone asks what “rushyama” means, so here’s the story. No, it’s not the result of a “What your Star Wars Name Would Be” quiz. Back when I first started using email (I think it was 1996), I was in need of a good screenname. Even back then, ruthmar and marruth were taken, and r_uth_m_ar and all the other alternatives listed were not appealing. After quite a lot of thought, I ended up smashing together the first two letters of my first, middle (Shun-Yan), and last names…which resulted in rushyama. It’s a little strange, but I’ve never had a problem having to think of another username!
