Lately, my younger brother has been posting inspirational music quotes on his Facebook page, probably to help motivate himself as he prepares for college auditions. Today’s quote was,
“When people hear good music, it makes them homesick for something they never had and never will have.”
I totally agree that good music has a way of revealing to us that there is something beyond the here and now. Whether through the intricacy of a Bach fugue, the power of a eighty-piece ensemble, or the simplicity of a well-crafted song, music forces us to look outside ourselves and recognize there are powers we can’t explain.
But does music just create a perpetual Weltschmerz (world-weariness)? If one’s beliefs about the nature of the world and God are vague or basically pessimistic (i.e. there is no God), then sure. Music is ultimately just a reminder that there are things you can’t explain and can’t have.
As a Christian, I am thankful that music serves a much more redemptive purpose. To me, good music reminds me that there is a Creator much greater than I, and that the music I will one day encounter will blow the best performances on this earth out of the water.
Music creates homesickness, but also inspires hope.

Two or three Thursdays a month, I drive north to Bellingham — roughly 90 minutes one way from Seattle with no traffic or rain — to teach harp. Yes, it’s a bit of a commute; most people look at me like I’m either slightly crazy or pitiable when they hear about it.
Certainly there are times when the drive is no fun. I remember in particular one stormy evening last November when it was raining so hard I could barely see through the windshield of my Corolla. An unusual number of semis/oversize vehicles graced the road that night; I would pray for self-preservation every time one approached because inevitably, the spray from their wheels would either completely inhibit my vision and/or cause me to hydroplane.
Scary stormy nights aside, I actually enjoy my commute. I like the feeling of taking off and being disconnected for those 90 minutes. If my phone rings, it goes to voicemail. Emails have to wait. No new tasks are added to the daily to-do list. My destination is my agenda.
Most of the time, I listen to those magical time-compressors: sermon CD’s or books on tape. Once, engrossed in the tension of a murder mystery, I even drove past my exit. Another time, I somehow managed to choose a story that described at length the terrible 405 traffic in Seattle and included characters from Bellingham and Bellevue. Oh, the irony.
For at least part of each trip, I try to drive in silence. Something about the hum of wheels on pavement and the long, straight stretches of road helps me process whatever’s my mind. Issues that I’ve been avoiding — purposely or not — can’t help but surface when distractions are removed.
The drive also helps me appreciate the beauty of God’s northwest creation. There are certain moments, especially on a sunny day, that are priceless: the point where your eye first catches a glimpse of a perfectly still lake; the immense trees as you wind over the pass right before Bellingham; the huge stretches of calm fields that are burst with whatever is in season.

As soon as I saw the subject line “Lynne Wainwright Palmer” in my inbox, I knew the news wouldn’t be good. My suspicions were soon confirmed as I read the notice that she had passed away last night.
Though I didn’t know Mrs. Palmer very well personally, I owe a lot to her musically: of my three primary harp instructors, two were her students and the third a great admirer and champion of her compositions. Soon after I started playing the harp, I began hearing about the great Mrs. Palmer. Stories of her extraordinary musical talent and inimitable teaching style were numerous and memorable, and I began trying to imagine what she was like in real life.
I met Mrs. Palmer for the first time when I was 14. I don’t really remember much about that meeting except that I played Salzedo’s “Flight” and that I was scared. I do remember my teacher reminding me to greet her with a “How do you do?” and my stomach turning in knots as we drove up to the Palmer residence in north Seattle. When I first laid eyes on the legend, my first thoughts were that she was very small and that her eyes were very bright.
I saw and played for Mrs. Palmer several times over the next few years. She was in her 80’s during this time, but was as sharp as ever and didn’t stand any sloppiness. She would listen with her brow furrowed, peering alternately at the music and my hands. She spoke her mind, and wasn’t one for lavish praise. But when she was pleased, you knew it. I remember playing one of her own compositions for her and receiving the approving nod and smile. It was a thrilling and gratifying moment.
Mrs. Palmer was confined to a wheelchair in recent years, but it didn’t stop her from attending harp society meetings and concerts. The last time I saw her was at a recital by one of my teachers, Judy Loman. It was a stifling hot day in July, and the power had gone out in the concert hall. But that didn’t stop Lynne from being in the front row, beaming with approval as Judy played a glorious concert on Lynne’s old Salzedo harp.
When I learned about Mrs. Palmer’s passing today, I was on my lunch break during my day of harp teaching in Bellingham. I was struck with the realization that she has had a profound impact on the work I do every day, and for that I am so very grateful.
On the day Carlos Salzedo died, Lynne Palmer made up her mind to begin composing for the harp because she knew she had to continue the work Salzedo had started. While I don’t have any compositional aspirations (yet), I think I understand the heightened sense of responsibility to pass on the knowledge one’s been privileged enough to receive. God help me…I’ll do my best, Mrs. Palmer.

Over the years, I’ve occasionally tried to journal — sometimes via blog, sometimes the old-fashioned way. Whatever the medium, the end result has been the same. I’ve stopped. I have no good excuses. Sure, maybe “life” has gotten in the way at times. But truthfully, mostly I’ve just lacked the discipline to keep it up.

2. Related to moving into my own place — while I’ll have a lot of new things to do for the first little bit, inevitably I’ll start having time on my hands. If I don’t intentionally start a good habit, I’ll end up wasting time on stupid things.
3. This past weekend, I was in the hospital visiting my dying great-aunt. I don’t really know her very well, but just being in the room with her and seeing life slip away was sobering. She’s almost 100 years old. I found myself wondering about her life, what she was like, and so on. I wished she had written things down — not even necessarily anything profound, but just simple things like what she’d done during the day or what mischief her kids had gotten into. Sure, I can get a few anecdotes from my mom or other relatives. I’ve gotten some already. But there is a permanency in the written word that can’t be matched by anything else.
